Sources of Information

Although there is a lot of useful information in these course notes they cannot replace a good beekeeping manual. There are lots to choose from, many of which are held in the association library and are available to members free of charge. Most beekeepers like to have at least one book of their own to consult at any time. The most popular, and the one we would recommend is:-Guide to Bees and Honey by Ted Hooper, published by Marston House [ISBN 1 899296 04 2] at about £10.

If after finishing this course you feel you would like to go on and keep bees then we strongly encourage you to join Beverly Beekeepers. Beverley is one of the districts of Yorkshire Beekeepers’ Association, which in turn is affiliated to British Beekeepers’ Association. Membership costs £18. Membership brings newsletters from BBKA, YBKA, and Beverley BKA. We have winter meetings monthly from October to March with guest lecturers and summer meetings various apiaries.

Membership also provides public liability against action arising from beekeeping activities and product liability against claims arising from the provision of beekeeping products.

There are also a number of good beekeeping journals available at reduced subscription and there is a scheme for insuring your hives against losses resulting from notifiable brood diseases. Cover for three hives is included in the membership fee.

Beekeeping equipment is available from a number of suppliers, the most comprehensive is E H Thornes (Beehives) Ltd, based at Wragby, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. Their catalogue and price list are included with these Course Notes. The local agent is Lester Quayle, 456 Hull Road, Dunswell, Hull (01482 859324).

Assistance is available to all beekeepers from the National Bee Unit (NBU) whose headquarters are at Central Science Laboratories (CSL), Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ. Tel: 01904 462510. They are an agency of Defra. There is a network of Regional Bee Inspectors to cover UK. We are in the North Eastern region covered by Tony Jefferson (Tel: 01947 893811).
